Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Aesthetics)

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid aesthetics, is the removal of excess skin or fat from the upper and lower eyelids, which has become very popular in recent years.

This surgical procedure makes the face look much younger and fresher, while widening the narrow field of vision in some people.

Who is Blepharoplasty Suitable for?

Generally, a certain age is not considered for this surgery. Because the procedure is not only performed for droopy eyelids due to old age. Some people may have genetic puffiness or droopy eyelids at a young age.

In general, however, people over the age of 40 prefer this procedure. The result of blepharoplasty is permanent and stable for about 10 to 15 years. However, there is a possibility that the eyelid skin may re-grow afterwards and this is completely normal.

How is Blepharoplasty Performed?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both. In general, the procedure consists of the following steps:

First, the surgeon starts the procedure by administering anesthesia.

Before making the surgical incisions, the surgeon carefully marks the areas where excess skin or fat pads will be removed. The precision is done with the help of precise surgical instruments.

During surgery, incisions are made under the upper eyelid fissure and slightly below the lower eyelid lashes, in accordance with the natural contours of the eyelid. The incisions are made in such a way that they are not visible after complete healing.

Finally, the wound is closed with very fine sutures or tissue adhesive to achieve the desired appearance.

What Should Be Considered After Blepharoplasty?

The things to be considered after blepharoplasty are as follows:

Bruising and swelling on the eyelids will decrease after a few days.

Using cold compresses accelerates the healing process.

Light activities such as walking also help the wound to heal. You can return to daily activities 7 to 10 days after blepharoplasty.

Thin bandages are usually placed over the incision site and removed after a few days.

Sensitivity to light and blurred vision for up to two days are normal. However, if it persists for more than this period, the surgeon should be informed.
